| Should
I oil or lubricate my strings so they tune better? |
| It's our opinion, oiling the strings isn't
necessary. Some folks advocate putting oil on the strings where
they cross the bridge cap to facilitate easier tuning. Applying oil may allow
oil to seep in around your tuning pins, causing them to slip.
The addition of oil is also a dust magnet and may increase the need
for periodic cleaning. A better solution is to have your dulcimer properly
Intonated.
Proper intonation will minimize tuning difficulties. |
| How
can I clean my strings? |
| The dulcimer differs from many other
instruments in that your hands aren't in constant contact with the
strings. Skin contact with the strings usually causes a build up
of body oils and acids that can adversely affect the tonal quality as
well as the appearance and life of the strings. Strings can
easily be cleaned by using a Scotchbrite Pad, the non-soapy
variety. The pad will remove rust spots as well as any build up
of body oils that have accumulated. |
