| How
do I clean my Dulcimer? |
| For a thorough cleaning, Dana Hamilton
once advocated strapping your dulcimer to the grill of your car and
driving through the local car wash. He also recommended you air
dry it by driving at 60 mph for approx. five minutes. The only
problem he had with this cleaning method was getting the bugs out of
the strings. |
| Of course, we don't agree with Dana and
recommend you use a soft cloth such as an old dish towel or a well
worn baby diaper (do they still come in cloth?) Spray a light
mist of your preferred dusting agent (Pledge, Endust, etc) on the
cloth. Rub the cloth against itself until the spray is
absorbed. Don't spray any dusting agent directly on your
dulcimer Sound Board or strings |
| Use a yard stick or other suitably flat
and rigid material to hold the cloth against the Sound Board as you
slide the cloth under the strings. For the areas where the
strings are too close to the Sound Board for the cloth to go under
them, you can use your fingers to guide the cloth to dust under and
around the strings. A paint brush with long, soft bristles also works
well in these areas. |
| For the Pin Block, we recommend a paint
brush with long, soft bristles. Simply brush the area to remove
dust and other foreign particles. |
| For the Back and Rails, we recommend you
use the "Pledge on the Cloth" method to clean and polish. |
